Four tips for cleaning laminate flooring

For decades, laminate floors have been considered an attractive, affordable alternative to natural flooring. The best laminate flooring has vibrant patterns, textured looks, robust surfaces, and a wide assortment of colors and styles.

One of the great benefits is its low maintenance. You can expect it to last 25 years or so with good care.

Remember, it can't be refinished. In this case, prevention is better than cure, so keep up with those scratches, stains, and scuffs to keep it in top shape.

Everyday preventative measures

Before you do anything, read your warranty instructions carefully. Although the cleaning process is generally the same, it can vary slightly with each manufacturer–or even with the type of laminate wood flooring product.

Other preventative measures include placing mats at entrances, keeping pet nails trimmed, and avoiding wearing stilettos on the floor. Don't use abrasive tools or too much water when mopping.

Sweep or dust mop regularly

Dirt and sand are sharp. It will embed between planks and scratches, so get rid of it!

Use a soft bristle broom or dust mop. If your vacuum has beater bars (those agitating brushes), remove them, as they can scratch your laminate flooring.

Mop every couple of months

Mopping every two months will do the trick. Mops should be damp, not dripping, and avoid products that aren't labeled for laminate flooring. Skip waxy, shine-promoting cleaners as they leave a residue.

Wipe spills immediately

Don’t let stains set, especially since laminate can’t be refinished. Once they’re there, they can’t be sanded off.
